If you are new to the world of Blackjack then don’t worry, it takes no time at all to get to grips with the basics and start playing. The idea is very simple; you need to build a hand of cards that is as close in value to 21 as possible but without exceeding it and going bust. As long as your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer’s is at the end of the round, then you have won.

The game is played with eight decks of cards. Aces are worth either 1 or 11, the face cards are all worth 10 and the numbered cards are worth their face value. The strongest hand is known as Blackjack, it is when you make exactly 21 with just two cards, an Ace and any of the cards that are worth ten.

You begin a round by placing your chips on the table, just as you would if you were sitting in a land casino. Once the bets have been placed each of the players at the table will receive two face-up cards and the dealer will receive one face-up card and one facedown card. When it is your turn to play you will have a number of options for your hand.

There are two basic options, ‘Hit’ and ‘Stand’. If you choose Stand then your hand remains as it is and play moves on to the next player. If you choose Hit then you will receive another card to your hand, as long as it doesn’t send you bust, you can then choose between Hit and Stand again. You will also be given the option of ‘Double’. You can use this if you think that you need just one more card to beat the dealer. It will double your bet, you will receive one more card, and then play will move on.

At the end of a round, the dealer will play their hand. The dealer will keep drawing cards until their hand is worth at least 16 and will stand on all 17s. If you win, you are paid out at 1:1, unless you are holding Blackjack, which is paid out at 3:2.

There are some scenarios when you will be offered more options. If the dealer’s first face-up card is an Ace then you will be offered the chance to take out ‘Insurance’ against the dealer having Blackjack. If the dealer then does have Blackjack you will be paid out at 2:1 so that you break even. Another option is ‘Split’. If your first two cards have the same value then you can Split them into two hands. It will double your bet, but also give you double the chances of beating the dealer.

The game also offers a couple of side bets, the 21+3 side bet and the Perfect Pairs side bet. The 21+3 side bet is on your first two cards and the dealer’s first card forming a Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Straight Flush or Suited Three of a Kind combination. The Perfect Pairs side bet is on your first two cards forming a Perfect Pair, a Coloured Pair or a Red/Black Pair. A Perfect Pair is two cards of the same suit and value, a Coloured Pair is two cards of the same value and colour, but from different suits, and a Red/Black Pair is two cards of the same value but different suits and colours. Both of these bets give you the chance to win huge payouts.
