Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul – How to Bet on the Fight

On June 6, Floyd Mayweather Jr will be facing Logan Paul in the ring for what is being called a “super exhibition” at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Many consider it to be a very strange matchup with one of boxing’s greatest ever fighters paired against a YouTube celebrity. However, while some may view it as a bit of a one-sided fight, there are still plenty of opportunities to bet and hopefully win some money.

The Background to the Fight

Floyd Mayweather has never lost a fight, he has a perfect record of 50-0. Mayweather retired from boxing in 2015, but he made a one-fight comeback in 2017 where he faced UFC’s Conor McGregor. When Mayweather faced McGregor, he was the overwhelming favourite and while he is once again, the odds are not quite as extreme as they were last time.

The extremely long odds in the 2017 fight were partly due to the fact that McGregor had hardly any experience in a boxing match. While the man is brimming with confidence and is the last person to be intimidated before stepping into the ring, his skills were not suited to fighting one of the most agile and successful boxers of all time.

This is not quite the case with Logan Paul. However, he has only fought professionally once and once in a white-collar match, both times against his fellow YouTube star KSI. Logan drew one of the fights and lost the other following a split decision. Incidentally, Logan’s brother Jake is a far more successful professional boxer and has a number of famous knockouts to his name.

In the fight that Logan lost to KSI, he did manage to knock the opponent to the mat. However, the knock down was ruled as illegal and he was penalized two points for forcing KSI’s head down before landing an uppercut.

Nonetheless, Logan showed that he was able to keep KSI at a distance by making use of his lengthy jab. On the other hand, some think that he was careless with the way the jabs landed as he tried to pair the attack with uncontrolled hooks. If he maintains this style when fighting Mayweather, then he may find his stamina put to the test as Mayweather is renowned for his defensive approach. Furthermore, Mayweather is sure to make the most of the openings Logan tends to leave when he makes careless swings.

The records of the two fighters could hardly be any more different. While Logan has never won a fight, over the course of his career Mayweather defeated many of the sport’s biggest names such as Canelo Alvarez, Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, and Manny Pacquiao.

Paul is far larger than Mayweather. Mayweather stands at 1 metre 73 and he weighs 68kg. By contrast, Paul is 1 meter 88 and he weighs 86kg. There is a chance that this will give him the advantage he needs, and some believe that he may even be capable of a knockout.

While Logan may have the age advantage, there is no doubting Mayweather’s fitness, and Logan’s youth is hardly likely to be an advantage, even if the match lasts for many rounds.

However, it should be a highly entertaining fight. Some believe that Mayweather could end it very quickly, but in order to please the crowd he could instead choose to play with his opponent and drag things out.

Mayweather vs Logan Betting Markets

There are plenty of markets open on this fight, each of which gives you the chance to win a bit more. Here are some thoughts regarding the most popular markets.

Betting on the Winner

This is a fight with a very firm favourite, so the winner market may not look too attractive. However, if you believe that Logan is capable of causing one of boxing’s biggest ever upsets, then the long odds on him are sure to appeal. In this instance, the winner market is quite lopsided. However, there are plenty of other markets to look at, and some of them are very attractive.

Fight to Go the Distance

If you believe that Mayweather is going to absolutely dominate this contest but at the same time toy with his opponent then this becomes a very interesting market. Will Mayweather stretch things out for as long as possible in order to please the crowd and give people value for money? Alternatively, will he decide to end things as quickly as possible to make a mockery of his opponent?

On the other hand, if you believe that Logan Paul will pose a real challenge to Mayweather, then this is also a market worth looking at. Whichever point of view you take, this can be a hugely enjoyable market and it offers the chance of some big returns.

Fight Outcome

This market presents you with a number of options and once again, it is a matter of your interpretation of how the fight will go. It allows you to bet on either fighter to win by Decision or Technical Decision, or for a fighter to win through KO, TKO or Disqualification. There is also the option of betting on a draw.

Once again, this market requires you to form an opinion of how each fighter will hold up against the other’s style. Mayweather is known as a defensive fighter, which means you may believe the fight will be won on points rather than a knockout. Paul on the other hand is more of an attacker, so if you think he will win, then perhaps you would bet on a knockout.

Round Betting

The great thing about this market is that the odds are very long. However, the reason for this is that it is quite hard to predict. The market requires you to bet on which fighter will win and in which round. It requires a lot of careful thought and a true understanding of the fighters and their respective styles. However, if you get it right then the returns could be huge. Therefore, it is a market that is certainly worth considering.

Over/Under Rounds Full Time

This market actually combines aspects of all of the above. It is a bet on whether there will be more or less than a given number of rounds. If you think it will be a short fight then you would bet on Under, while if you think the fighters are going to slog it out for round after round, then you bet Over. In many ways, this is a far easier market to call than those discussed above, so it is definitely worth building into your betting strategy.

Winning Groups of Rounds

This is a slightly more specific version of the previous market, and as such, it offers longer odds, so you could win more from a smaller bet. It is a bet on a fighter to win within a specific set of rounds, for example rounds 1 to 3 or rounds 7 to 9. Once again, it requires you to predict the strategies that each fighter will take to the match and how the opponent will cope.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are a lot of fun and they will often present some very long odds that you may be able to take advantage of. The prop bets are not always standardised, so as the fight gets closer is worth checking regularly to see what is on offer. Common boxing prop bets include betting on a fighter to be knocked down, on which fighter will be knocked down first, on blood to be drawn in a fight, and on which fighter will bleed first.
