English Premier League Betting Guide and Tips

With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelo Lukaku, Harry Kane, Jack Grealish and Mohamed Salah, the Premier League is considered by many to be the most exciting in the world. It presents fans with a huge number of opportunities to place bets and in this guide, you will find all the background information you need to get started.

The English Premier League

Some argue that the English Premier League has the best football in the world. The matches are broadcasted to a potential audience of over 4 billion people. It is home to some of the most renowned football clubs in Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City, amongst many others.

Aside from the diehard fans who watch their team play week in week out, there are plenty of single matches that excite the football world; whether it is Manchester City and Liverpool going head to head, or a Manchester derby between City and United.

Best Teams to Bet On

With some of the top talent and largest team budgets, the Premier League boasts many of the best home grown talents as well as some of the top international players. The clubs buy some world class players, primarily from Europe but also from South America, Africa and Asia. They also have very experienced scouts, who look for up and coming talents who will fit the fast and physical English game.

Manchester City

The current title holders are bound to go into almost every game as favourites. The team is managed by Pep Guardiola, who is most famous for managing Barcelona and bringing up their star player in Lionel Messi. The Citizens, as Manchester City is fondly named by its fans, rarely drop points. They were tipped all transfer season to buy England and Tottenham captain Harry Kane, but instead of buying the striker they went for left winger Jack Grealish, who cost a cool £100 million. But with the departure of leading striker Sergio Aguero, questions were raised about the attacking quality of City's game.

They quickly quelled the rumours by manning Ferran Torres as their main striker with Jack Grealish, Riyadh Mahrez and Raheem Sterling providing support from the wings.

Liverpool

The past few years have been a bit of a fairy tale for the club, with manager Jurgen Klopp bringing in a new direct attacking play that helped them win their first League in 30 years in 2019. Though the team has now aged, with key players Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane nearing 30, and Roberto Fimino and Van Dijk already turning 30, the club has shown no signs of slowing down. Salah has shown remarkable form, scoring 10 goals in 10 matches, with 6 assists.

Chelsea

Since sacking club legend Frank Lampard from his managerial post, Chelsea has gone from strength to strength under manager Thomas Tuchel. In this transfer season they brought back Romelo Lukaku, a proven goalscorer in the league. The squad depth of the Blues is heavy with star players that have been put together over the past few seasons. They have had the strongest start to the season and are strong contenders to win the league this season.

Manchester United

It looked like it was going to be United’s year, following a shrewd transfer window that saw the return of club legend and 5 time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Jaden Sancho and Raphael Varane. They started the season well enough, but have struggled with consistency, and now have a long climb if they want to win the league. That said, they are still a force to reckon with, and on the right day they know how to come back from matches they are losing and win matches where the odds against them are high.

Tottenham Hotspur

Their biggest victory in the transfer window was holding onto their captain Harry Kane. They have also had a shaky start, yet they are definitely aiming for a top four finish at least. Manager Brendan Rogers just lost out to a top four finish last season, when Manchester United overtook them in the final matches. This season they had a major restructuring of the team, with 10 players arriving and 10 departing, and manager Brendan Rogers will be hoping to bring the best out of his rejuvenated side.

Arsenal

The Gunners, as they are known, have fallen out of grace in the past few years. Since sacking their long-time manager Arsene Wenger in 2018, they have struggled to get back into the top four, and despite spending a lot of money on boosting their roster, they have not been able to put together match winning performances. However, under manager Mikel Arteta, they have turned around their disastrous start to the season and have been steadily picking up the wins to show that they still belong amongst the top four.

Underdogs

The Premier League is renowned for high competition, even amongst the “smaller” clubs. Teams like West Ham, Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers are capable of giving the bigger teams a run for their money, and have pulled off big upsets. Leeds and Crystal Palace are also worthy of a mention, but these teams will probably not win the Premier League as they struggle with consistency.

Biggest Matches to Bet On

Manchester City vs Liverpool

Many believe that the winner of the match between these two powerhouses will go on to win the league. Since 2017-2018 when Liverpool bought Mohamed Salah, they have been a threat to Manchester City. Recently, Liverpool have won more of these derbies than Manchester City, but it is still difficult to predict as they both have the quality to chase each until the very final minutes. In the 2019-2020 season, when Liverpool had already won the league due to their points, City used the match to make a statement, winning 4-0.

Manchester Derby

Manchester City and Manchester United have one of the fiercest derbies in the premier league. Interest in the derby became much bigger when, in 2016, Pep Guardiola became the manager of City and Jose Mourinho became Manchester United’s manager. The rivalry between the two managers attracted fans who did not support either team to watch the game just to see which manager would come out on top.

North London Derby

The North London derby is a must for all fans of either Arsenal or Tottenham. This fixture used to favour Arsenal, back in their heyday when they were playing the likes of Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell and Patrick Vieira. Nowadays the gulf in difference has been reduced, with Tottenham putting together a formidable team.

Manchester United vs Liverpool

This is one of the longest standing rivalries in football. Both clubs have had eras where they dominated the English league, only to be followed by the other; in the 50s United started their dominance, winning 3 titles. In the following decade, Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, and Manchester United manager both took two titles each, in alternating seasons from 1963-1967. It was not until the 70’s through to the 1990, when Liverpool added 11 trophies to their cabinet, with United failing to win for 23 years. The tables turned in the Sir Alex Ferguson era, when United won 13 titles, and Liverpool went 30 years without one, until they finally won it in 2020 with Jurgen Klopp.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

This rivalry started in 2004, when Chelsea was bought by Roman Abramovich, who immediately started spending money to buy top players and brought in manager Jose Mourinho. He won back to back titles and reached over 90 points in both seasons.

Manchester City vs Chelsea

Both of these teams have only recently become potential league winners. Chelsea had their takeover in 2004, whilst Manchester City were bought in 2008, and both have received heavy investments. In the 2010s Chelsea won twice, whilst City have won the league four times.
