Route to the World Cup
Argentina
As usual, Argentina’s route to the 2022 World Cup was via the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) with 10 teams taking part in a round-robin qualification group. Argentina finished in second place, unbeaten after 17 games, winning 11 and drawing 6 fixtures. They started well with two wins over Ecuador and Bolivia in the opening two fixtures before a home draw against Paraguay that may have created a few doubts in their camp. The next three games saw another win and two further draws meaning it was not exactly the start to the group they were expecting. That said, they continued to pick up wins and sufficient points, not losing any qualification games to book their place in Qatar comfortably.
Saudi Arabia
2022 World Cup qualification involved Saudi Arabia playing in Group B of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The group had a total of six teams including Saudi Arabia and they played each other home and away to determine who would qualify. The top two placed went on to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Saudi Arabia finished top of Group B, winning 7, drawing 2 and losing 1 game. They got off to a great start winning their first four matches and all of their home matches. Saudi Arabia were beaten by Japan with draws against China PR and Australia as they progressed.
