How to Play Live Baccarat

There is no need to worry if you have never played Baccarat before; it is essentially a very simple game that takes very little time to get to grips with. The game has just three possible bets and three possible outcomes of each round. Either the Banker position wins, the Player position wins, or the round ends in a Tie.

You will be betting on which hand position ends the round with a value closer to 9. To start a round you place your bets and then once all players have bet, each hand position is dealt two cards. In Baccarat, Aces are worth 1, number cards (2 through 10) are worth their face value and face cards (Jack, Queen and King) are worth 10. If the total of the two cards is greater than ten (e.g. a 5 and an 8, which is worth 13), then ten is subtracted from the total (so 5 and 8 are worth 3).

At its most basic, after the two cards have been dealt and the totals calculated, the round ends and players are paid out for any winning bets. However, there are some situations when a third card may be dealt to either of the hand positions.

A hand is called a ‘Natural’ if it is worth 8 or 9 and no further hands are dealt to that position. However, if the Player position is worth 5 or less then it will receive a third card. If the Player position does not receive a third card then the Banker position will receive a third card if it is worth 5 or less but will not receive a third card if it is worth 6 or more.

If the Player position has received a third card then there are some slightly complicated rules governing the Banker position third card. If the Banker position is worth 2 or less then it receives a third card. If the Banker position is worth 3 then it receives a third card as long as the Player’s third card was not an 8. If the Banker position is worth 5 then the Banker will receive a third card if the Player’s third card was a 4, 5, 6 or 7. If the Banker position is worth 6 then it will receive a third card if Player’s third card was a 6 or 7. The Banker will not receive a third card if the position has a total of 7 or higher.

It may take you a little while to remember these rules. However, if additional cards need to be dealt then it is done automatically by the dealer, so you can still play and with time, you are sure to internalise the different scenarios.

Once a round is over, winning bets are paid out at 2:1, except for Tie bets, which pay out at 8:1.

Live Baccarat Side Bets

In some Live Baccarat games, you are able to take advantage of different side bets to try to increase your winnings. The Player Pair and Banker Pair side bets are bets on whether the player’s or the banker’s first two cards will be a pair and it offers a payout of 11:1. On occasion, you will find side bets such as the Player Bonus, Banker Bonus, Either Pair and Perfect Pairs side bets. These offer payouts all the way up to 200:1 (for Perfect Pair, two pairs), and can make the game even more enjoyable.

Live Baccarat Roadmaps

Many people make use of different roadmap scorecards to try to spot trends when playing Baccarat. There are many different types of roadmaps and each is used in its own way. One of the most popular roadmaps is the Bead Plate, which is used to record individual hands. On this roadmap if the Banker wins the hand then it is marked with red, if the Player wins it is marked with blue and Ties are marked with green. The marks begin in the top left corner and move down a column with each round. When the bottom of the column is reached, the record starts again at the top of the next column to the right.

Another popular roadmap is the Big Road. This is used to look for trends in the results and will emphasise consecutive wins for one of the positions. Blue dots are used for Player wins and Red dots are used for Banker wins. A new column is started each time the winning hand changes from Player to Banker.

The Big Eye Boy roadmap builds on the Big Road. A mark is placed on the Big Eye Boy each time a new column starts on the Big Road. However, this time red is used to represent repetition and blue represents a change.

There are many more roadmaps available, such as the Small Road and the Cockroach Pig, and by using them together, players are able to discern many different trends and patterns in the results of games.
